Sometimes You Choose, Sometimes the Practice Chooses You

In 2015, I took my first steps in the legal profession at a firm with a general practice. There was no specific area of law, but rather a broad mix of civil cases and criminal law. My first cases involved customs law, tenancy law, homeowners association law, and contractual disputes. Later on, I handled matters in inheritance law, liability law, family law, and the occasional administrative law issue. Every now and then, a criminal case would come up — part of my professional training.

That’s quite normal on a small island like Curaçao. Being a true specialist is rare here; versatility is often the norm.

When I started my own firm in 2022, I decided to focus on personal, family, and inheritance law, with real estate law in the background. I took courses and fully committed to deepening my expertise. Still… something kept tugging at me. 🤔

Little by little, tenancy and contract law cases started coming my way again. An interim assignment at an insurance company reintroduced me to liability law and personal injury cases.

And then it became clear to me: you can’t fight your nature.

Now, in 2025, I describe my practice as a broad civil practice with the occasional administrative law case.

And that’s exactly what makes me happy. 😊

The lesson?

You’re allowed to make choices and change direction.

Sometimes, it’s that very combination of focus and flexibility that brings you closer to where you truly belong.
